Feel Those Feelings

Hello,

If you're like me, maybe you have a history of feeling a feeling and then immediately REPRESSING it. Maybe you feel anger, annoyance, but swallow your reaction and give a tight smile.

We know a lot of anger stems from fear, a lot of annoyance from anxiety, and a lot of tight lipped smiles from the feeling of not being free to be honest. So what happens to those repressed emotions? Well, they get stored for later expression.  Repressing them doesn't make them go away.  I know...it's a sucky truth.

Getting in touch with your inner emotional world can be both daunting and healing in equal measure. Taking the time to engage with our feelings, understand them, and give ourselves the space to truly feel what we’re feeling in the moment is one of the most compassionate and powerful things a person can do.

Now, we can't always immediately express them, but we can lean into FEELING them. Maybe that looks like a quick step away, a pause, a break from a conversation, a deep breath and a moment to yourself. Ask yourself what's the emotion under all the emotions? What does it remind you of? Sometimes new things can trigger old feelings.

By allowing ourselves to recognize and explore our emotions, we're taking a major step toward self-care which can have incredible benefits for our mental health, relationships, productivity, and decision making.

This can be a practice or an art form, depending on how many years you've been shoving your emotions aside.

Love,

Dr. Jane Tornatore
